How to Choose the Right Kerala Ayurveda Hospital

Here is a scenario we encounter regularly.

A patient from the UK or UAE spends weeks researching Kerala Ayurveda hospitals online. They look at websites, read testimonials, and compare packages. They eventually book a programme at a well-marketed hospital, travel to Kerala, and spend three weeks receiving treatments. They return home feeling somewhat better — but not with the transformation they had hoped for.

Months later, they contact us. They describe what they received — mostly massage, steam, and a few herbal medicines. When we ask about the specifics of their treatment, it becomes clear that they received a wellness experience, not a medically directed treatment protocol. No proper diagnosis. No Virechana or Basti. No authentic Panchakarma in the classical sense. Just pleasant treatments under the Ayurveda label.

This happens constantly. And it happens because choosing a Kerala Ayurveda hospital is genuinely difficult unless you know what to look for.

This guide is our attempt to change that.

The Two Worlds of Kerala Ayurveda

Before we discuss how to choose, you need to understand that "Kerala Ayurveda" is not a monolithic thing. There are essentially two worlds operating under the same label:

World 1: Clinical Ayurveda Hospitals These are medically operated facilities with BAMS and MD (Ayu) qualified physicians, in-house pharmacies, classical treatment protocols, and an admission process that begins with a thorough medical consultation. They exist to treat disease and restore health. The treatments are individualised, the doctors are present daily, and the outcomes are tracked.

World 2: Ayurveda Wellness Resorts These are hospitality businesses that offer Ayurveda-branded experiences. Beautiful properties, scenic locations, and pleasant treatments. The staff performing treatments may be trained therapists, but medical oversight is typically superficial. These facilities are appropriate for relaxation and general wellness. They are not appropriate for treating chronic medical conditions.

The challenge is that both types of facilities use identical language — Panchakarma, detox, healing, transformation, dosha balancing — and both charge significant sums. A first-time patient has almost no way to tell the difference from a website.

This is the gap that our patient advisory service at Dr.Hridu Talks fills.

Seven Things to Verify Before Choosing a Kerala Ayurveda Hospital

    1. NABH Accreditation

The National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) is India's gold standard for hospital quality assessment. NABH accreditation for an Ayurveda hospital means the facility has met verified standards for:

    • Physician qualifications and specialisation
    • Medicine quality and pharmacy practices
    • Hygiene and patient safety protocols
    • Medical record keeping and patient rights
    • Documented treatment protocols

Always ask: "Is your hospital NABH accredited?" And then verify independently — accreditation is listed on the NABH website. A facility that claims accreditation should be able to provide their certificate with a current validity date.

This alone will filter out a significant number of commercially-oriented facilities.

    2. Resident Qualified Physician — Not a Visiting Doctor

In a genuine clinical Ayurveda hospital, a BAMS-qualified physician sees inpatients daily. This doctor reviews your pulse, notes your response to treatment, adjusts medicines and procedures, and is responsible for your progress.

In many wellness facilities, there is a consulting doctor who sees you on day one and perhaps once or twice more during your stay. Day-to-day treatments are managed by therapists without clinical oversight.

Always ask: "Which doctor will be overseeing my treatment daily? What are their qualifications? Can I speak with them before I arrive?"

If the answer is vague, or if no specific named physician can be identified, proceed with caution.

    3. Pre-Admission Medical Consultation

A responsible clinical Ayurveda hospital will not confirm your admission for a treatment programme without a proper medical consultation first.

Before you travel — especially from abroad — you should be able to speak with or send your health records to the treating physician. They should review your case and give you a preliminary treatment plan. They should ask about your medications, your health history, your previous treatments, and any contraindications.

A hospital that confirms a "Panchakarma package" without asking a single medical question is not operating as a medical facility.

Our advisory process at Dr. Hridu Talks includes this step as standard — we review your case before any hospital booking is made.

    4. In-House Pharmacy with Traditional Medicine Preparation

Authentic Ayurvedic treatment depends on authentic medicines. The best Kerala hospitals manufacture their own medicines — medicated ghees (ghrita), fermented preparations (arishtas and asavas), herbal decoctions (kashayam), and medicated oils — from herbs sourced locally and processed according to classical methods.

This is significant for two reasons:

First, in-house preparation allows physicians to tailor formulations to individual patients. A hospital that uses only commercially packaged medicines has no ability to adjust formulations based on your specific case.

Second, the quality of medicines directly affects treatment outcomes. Commercially produced medicines, while standardised, cannot match the potency and freshness of properly prepared in-house medicines.

Ask: "Does the hospital have its own pharmacy? Are medicines prepared in-house, or sourced from commercial manufacturers?"

    5. Transparent, Itemised Cost Estimates

Cost transparency is a direct indicator of how an institution operates.

A trustworthy Kerala Ayurveda hospital will give you a detailed, itemised cost estimate before admission covering:

    • Room and board
    • Physician consultation fees
    • Treatment procedure costs
    • Medicine costs (often a variable based on what is prescribed)
    • Any additional tests or assessments

Be cautious of hospitals that quote a single package price with vague inclusions, or that are reluctant to give written cost estimates. Hidden costs that appear after arrival are a sign of poor management at best, exploitation of overseas patients at worst.

Our advisory team at Dr. Hridu Talks negotiates transparent, pre-agreed pricing with our partner hospitals for every patient we refer. There are no surprises.

    6. Condition Specialisation

Not every Ayurveda hospital is equally equipped for every condition. The best Kerala hospitals have developed specific depth in particular areas:

    • Some hospitals are known for their neurological rehabilitation programmes (post-stroke, Parkinson's, MS)
    • Others specialise in musculoskeletal and orthopaedic conditions
    • Some have particularly strong dermatology (psoriasis, eczema) programmes
    • Others focus on metabolic conditions or women's health

A hospital that claims equal expertise in everything is likely to be mediocre at most things.

Our advisory network spans 50+ hospitals with mapped specialisations. When you consult us, we match you to the hospital whose clinical strength aligns with your specific condition — not just the nearest or most popular option.

    7. Post-Treatment Support Plan

A classical Panchakarma course does not end on discharge day. The paschatkarma (post-treatment) phase — involving dietary guidelines, activity restrictions, Rasayana medicines, and follow-up consultations — is essential for sustaining results.

Ask: "What support does the hospital provide after I leave? Will I have a follow-up consultation? Who can I contact if I have questions after returning home?"

Hospitals that invest in post-treatment support are hospitals that care about long-term outcomes, not just filling beds.

Our advisory team provides ongoing post-treatment follow-up for all patients referred through Dr. Hridu Talks — regardless of which partner hospital you are admitted to.

Questions to Ask Every Hospital Before You Book

Print this list and use it:

    1. Is your hospital NABH accredited? Can you share the certificate?
    2. Which BAMS or MD (Ayu) physician will manage my treatment? What are their qualifications?
    3. Can I have a consultation with the treating physician before I travel?
    4. Does your hospital have an in-house pharmacy?
    5. What specific treatment protocol do you recommend for my condition?
    6. Can you provide a written, itemised cost estimate?
    7. What does the daily schedule look like for a patient with my condition?
    8. What dietary guidelines will I follow during treatment?
    9. What is the cancellation and refund policy?
    10. What follow-up support do you provide after discharge?

A hospital that answers all ten questions clearly and specifically is a hospital worth considering seriously.

    Why Patient Advocacy Matters

The gap between what patients expect from Kerala Ayurveda and what they actually receive is not always the result of bad intentions. Sometimes it is simply a mismatch — a patient with a serious chronic condition booked into a facility designed for wellness tourism, because both presented themselves online in similar ways.

Our work at Dr. Hridu Talks is to prevent that mismatch.

We are a team of BAMS-qualified doctors. We know the Kerala Ayurveda landscape — which hospitals are genuinely clinical, which have strong programmes for which conditions, which are good value and which inflate prices for international patients. We have visited our partner hospitals. We know the physicians.

When you come to us, we do not give you a list of hospitals and wish you well. We assess your case, match you to the right facility, prepare you for what the treatment will involve, support your visa process, stay in touch during your stay, and follow up with you after you return home.

Our service is free to patients. We are supported by the hospitals in our network, not by charging patients.

    Start with a Conversation

If you are planning to come to Kerala for Ayurveda treatment — for any condition — begin with a consultation with our team. Bring your health records, your questions, and your honest concerns.

We will give you a straightforward picture of what Ayurveda can and cannot offer for your situation, which type of facility is appropriate for your needs and budget, and what realistic outcomes look like.
